Screening

The first step in the screening process for dyslexics is answering a questionnaire.  For child dyslexics, the questionnaire is conducted with their parents, while adult dyslexics participate in answering the questionnaire themselves. Nine areas that are likely to indicate dyslexia are covered. These are:
1. Genetic background
2. Difficulties with speech
3. Difficulties with the direction of letters
4. Difficulties with memory and recall
5. Difficulties with understanding and responding to spoken language
6. Difficulties with reading
7. Difficulties with writing and spelling
8. Other learning difficulties
9. The strengths and talents of dyslexics

If there is a sufficient number of answers from the questionnaire to indicate dyslexia, further screening tasks are completed regarding:
1. Knowledge of the alphabet
2. Spelling of irregular words
3. Identification of individual sounds in spoken words
4. Reading words
5. Translating written letters into sounds
6. Translating heard sounds into letters
7. Repeating sounds the student hears
8. Ability to recognize the individual sounds that makeup words
9. Identifying the specific position of sounds within words
10. Ability to rearrange the sounds within words
11. Ability to pronounce unknown words
